Figma SP-017 Black Gold Saw
From the anime OVA Black★Rock Shooter, Black Gold Saw was shown engaged in an epic sword fight with Black★Rock Shooter at the beginning of the movie. Her origins are unknown, her human counterpart undisclosed but we can assume that it was her that gave Black★Rock Shooter her scars.

Packed in the same way as the other toys in the Figma Black★Rock Shooter line, the toy is enclosed in a good quality cardboard box with a big window at the front. All the accessories are laid out clearly, supported in a plastic tray. At the back there are photos depicting the toy in action as well as general information. Again, the inside cardboard liner has a perforated part to be used as a cover on a di:stage.
Black Gold Saw comes with 3 interchangeable face parts, her giant sword a.k.a. “King Sword”, and three extra pairs of bone claws. I absolutely love the extra face parts, however her hands slip out of place quite easily, especially when she is hold her massive sword. Of course, a standard Figma stand is also included.
She is quite beautiful isn’t she, in a cold, deadly and scary kind of way. Obviously you can’t make toys the way they animate the character but I think the depiction is pretty close. Proportions are nice, and if it weren’t for the unstable design of her feet, the figure would be able to balance quite nicely on its own. The top part of her hair is moulded in soft PVC, however the articulated lower portions are made from a harder material (ABS I think), I would have preferred for all the hair to be soft and flexible.
Apart from a few minor gripes, I think the articulation of this toy is rather good. Let’s get the negatives out of the way first. The biggest problem here is again her feet design, not only is it thin and unstable, it also only tilts forwards and up which is pretty useless. Secondly, due to the weight of her sword, the hands fall out constantly and her shoulders have a hard time staying in raised poses. With that out of the way, the rest of the toy is quite good. Knees, elbows, shoulders, hips and waist all have a good range of motion.
Paint job is a bit questionable on this toy. I’m not sure if it is just my one, or across the board. There are some really nice bits such as the face detail, the belt and buckle, sword and hilt detail. But then on closer inspection, there are also some terrible bits such as her coat collar (absolute mess!) and boot trim (again, messy!). On her belly, paint from her bra top rubs off and stains the skin which is a bit disappointing.
Black Gold Saw is the tallest of all the Figma Black★Rock Shooter girls released so far, although I’m sure she will be taller than Strength as well when she arrives later this year. I love the fact each of these look totally different but you can tell straight away they are from the same line and series even if you don’t know the story.
If you’re a fan of the OVA, this is an absolute must get. When all the girls line up and are displayed together, it is absolutely stunning to look at. I can’t wait until Strength is released, and hopefully more characters to come from this amazing series (despite the minor let downs with this particular toy)!
Thanks for reading:)
