Super Robot Chogokin Anti-Gurren Lagann

Background:

Anti-Gurren Lagann made it’s first official appearance on the 5th of April 2012 in “Super Robot Wars ZII” as a part of the 20th anniversary of the “Super Robot Wars” series.

Anti-Gurren Lagann is piloted by Simon, and it represents Simon at his most depressed and hopeless state which is reflected by the dark colour scheme.

SRC Anti-Gurren Lagann

Packaging:

I don’t think I’ve ever used the word “sexy” to describe any sort of toy packaging but in this case I can’t think of a better word. The black and red graphic on the front of the box is dynamic and emotive, perfectly capturing the essence of the Anti-Gurren Lagann! Inside it’s a pretty standard setup with the figure and contents safely encased in plastic trays.

Accessories:

Anti-Gurren Lagann comes with 3 extra pairs of hands, 3 optional face plates, purple Anti-spiral drills x 4, drill set A (26 drills), drill set B (6 drills) and a Tamashii Stage adaptor.

  • SRC Anti-Gurren Lagann optional faces
  • SRC Anti-Gurren Lagann Anti-spiral drill & drill set B
  • SRC Anti-Gurren Lagann drill set A

Form/Sculpt:

The SRC Gurren Lagann design may not be suited to everyone’s taste as the lower body is quite stylized. I’m not sure why Bandai decided to do this as the rest of the SRC line toys seem to be very anime / show accurate. The weird thing is the upper body design looks fairly conventional, it’s only the wide hips and huge knee caps that goes a bit too far for some people. Having said that, the toy is beautifully made and feels very solid in the hands. I personally love it!

Articulation/Action:

This guy is loaded with joints, too many to count so I’ll do a quick run down from head to toe. Head is double ball jointed, beck has a swivel joint, shoulders are ball and swivel jointed, elbows are double jointed with one being ratcheted, wrists are swivel and ball jointed, waist rocks side to side and back and forwards and rotates, hips swivel up and down and are also ball jointed, knees are double jointed with a ratchet, ankles are ball and swivel jointed and can also extend. Not to mention all the joints that hold the armour parts.

  • SRC Anti-Gurren Lagann does the Wolverine
  • SRC Anti-Gurren Lagann aim for the top!
  • SRC Anti-Gurren Lagann taunt
  • SRC Anti-Gurren Lagann black and proud!

Paint/Print:

The colour scheme for the Anti-Gurren Lagann may be simple but it looks insanely good and it is beautifully applied. The red contrasts so well against the black without overpowering it which adds to the sinister look of the Anti-Gurren Lagann.

  • SRC Anti-Gurren Lagann knee paint detail

Detail/Features:

The forearm can be detached and swapped with Gurren Lagann and a number of other releases from the SRC toy line. Anti-Gurren Lagann can also make use of SRC Gurren Lagann’s Gurren Wing as it shares the same mould on the back of the body.

  • SRC Anti-Gurren Lagann swappable forearms
  • SRC Anti-Gurren Lagann with Gurren Wing

Looking at a front on comparison against the SRC Gurren Lagann, obviously they share most of the same mould but as far as I can tell Anti-Gurren Lagann has new face plate, new torso “face” and new shoulder armour. Good to see it isn’t just a straight repaint.

Overall:

I’ve always loved Gurren Lagann ever since the first time I watched the anime and even though that was quite a few years ago now I am super glad to see there are still new toys coming out from this franchise. I will always be a fan and will probably buy any mecha toy related to the series but I can genuinely say I love the SRC Anti-Gurren Lagann, even more so than the standard version. As the old saying goes, once you go black you can never go back!

Thanks for reading!

Great photography and review man. Black is sometimes cooler, and it’s true with this figure. I think I prefer the sculpt of GL Composite Ver Ka though. How do they compare size wise?

You make good choices with your figures. That Karas figure you reviewed is around $500 now. DOH!

    • Thanks Anth, glad you enjoyed the review! I did not compare this to the Gl Composite Ver Ka but size wise they are very close in terms of numbers. SRC is 155mm where as the Composite Ver. Ka stands 150mm tall.

I mainly collect toys I like the design of or if I liked the animes/movie/manga, too bad some of the toys are way out of my budget now. Luckily I got my hands on Karas before it was sold out at retail. Others I’ve had to hunt and pay a premium for, definitely not the cheapest hobby to have haha!

Just asking if you know any paint that matches the forearms of gl, along with the gold on his shoes and waist. Mine has had a couple of scratches =(. Sorry if its a bit off topic. Great reviw on anti gl. Btw is his torso plate removable like gl?

    • Sorry to hear about the scratches on your GL. I don’t know the paint codes off the top of my head but if you go down to your local hobby store you should be able to find some Tamiya paints that will match the colour.

Anti-GL’s torso is not removable. Hope this helps and thanks for dropping by!

How do I get it? Please mention some options, where this is available with shipping facilitie.. I need it so bbadly!!
