Packaging:

The Beam Cannon Unit comes in a similar style packaging to the Shield Liger toy, thick cardboard box houses the styrene trays which keeps the contents safe. Even the size of the box has been considered as it is the same width and height as the Liger box for easy storage of the two together. It is much thinner though but it’s nice to see that packaging hasn’t been compromised just because this is an upgrade kit.

Accessories:

Directly translated from the original Yamato website, the set includes Beam Cannon x 2, Energy Tank x 2, Beam Cannon Booster x 2, Missile Pod Attachment x 2. I’m not exactly sure how they came to this description but from what I can see you get two main beam cannons, back plate which you can attach the original missile pods to and two power cable pipes to connect the back plate to the cannons.

  • Zoids Beam Cannon Unit - take off original missile pod to attach cannon
  • Zoids Beam Cannon Unit with Beam Cannon attached
  • Zoids Beam Cannon Unit back plate attachment

Form/Sculpt:

There is quite a lot of detail put into the cannons and when attached to the Shield Liger it looks really nice and definitely beefs up its offense capabilities. The cannon can sit in a few different positions on top of the Shield Liger as the base is retractable. All the parts fit onto the Liger quite well and don’t feel loose at all.

Articulation/Action:

When paired with Shield Liger’s already amazing articulation it becomes simply incredible. It adds a whole new level of playability to the toy and in my opinion really completes it. With the combination of the retractable base of the cannon and Liger’s original swinging missile pod arm on the sides, the cannon can be pointed in almost any direction.

  • Zoids Shield Liger with Beam Cannon Unit taking aim
  • Zoids Shield Liger with Beam Cannon Unit dodge
  • Zoids Shield Liger with Beam Cannon Unit ready for deployment
  • Zoids Shield Liger with Beam Cannon Unit surrounded on all sides!

Paint/Print:

Paint app on the Beam Cannon Unit is very tidy. There is a lot of painted detail applied to bring out the design of the cannon.

  • Zoids Beam Cannon Unit paint detail
  • Zoids Beam Cannon barrel paint detail
  • Zoids Beam Cannon Unit missile pod attachment paint detail
  • Zoids Beam Cannon Unit power cable attachment paint detail

Detail/Features:

The missile pods on the back plate can rotate as they simply plug into place. I love the fact that this upgrade kit doesn’t require any parts from the original toy to be discarded.

  • Zoids Beam Cannon Unit missile pod rotation

A close up look at the retractable base of the Beam Cannon reveals that the pistons actually work and the pistons are metal.

Overall:

If you own a Yamato Zoids Shield Liger full action model, then you MUST buy this kit. Your Shield Liger will be ever grateful to you and you know you will have done the right thing!

Thanks again for reading.

just wondering, do u know where to watch or download zoids with japanese audio?

    every where is english dub..

that is why i only watched zoids genesis..

    • unfortunately I don’t, I’ve only got the English dub version of the original Zoids series. I still watched it though…better that than nothing:P

    Hi Eric,

The beam cannon, are they all diecast or is it plastic? Also, what is the (approx)weight of the cannons? They look big next to the Shield Liger and shpuld have some weight if made of diecast.

I am hunting these cannon with the arrival of my Shield Liger. I bouth it mainly due to your review and the diecast content and of course that I got it slighty below 100 USD shipped. I have absolutely no expectation … but I am so happy I bought. It’s well-made piece from Yamato!

    • Hi Danny, the beam cannons are not die-cast but they are highly detailed and made from a solid grade of plastic. The only metal content are the pistons which allow you to position the cannons.

You will not be disappointed with the Shield Liger, especially at the price you bought it for! It is an awesome toy and I still have it on display on my top shelf!

Sorry, I keep sending comments linked to this review though it’s 8 months old. But every diecast collector … All of you simply have to buy it … if not for the great details, so for its weight. I was amazed when I had it in my hands. I have all Fewture Ex Gokins, but this one out-weight them all by a mile!

I am soooo happy I bought this one!

Thank for your review! I would not have bought it otherwise!

Thank also for a fantastic site!

    • No need to say say sorry, leave as many comments here as you like!:)

I’m glad you like this piece, when I first took it out of the box I was in awe, this is definitely worthy of any collection. I have mine displayed with my Fewture Ex Gokins:)

      Thanks for visiting!

    • Wow I must confess you make some very trenchant points.
